So Thankful

I try to have a thankful heart all the time, but I’d be lying if there weren’t days when I’m so consumed with all that’s happening in life and in the world that I forget to just stop and say thanks to those who have been such an important part of my life.  Though yesterday was Thanksgiving, I want this blog entry to be a thank you and a reflection of what I’m most thankful for on any given day.

First, I am so incredibly thankful for CME.  He has been my biggest supporter – not just through this weight loss surgery, but in every day life.   He works so incredibly hard to provide for our family – taking on two jobs, working long hours (sometimes up 24+ hours with no sleep) and holidays when the rest of us are enjoying time off with family and friends.  I probably don’t tell him often enough, “Thank you.”  I probably don’t tell him often enough, “I am so proud of you.”  I probably don’t tell him often enough, “You are a great husband and father.”  I probably don’t tell him often enough how thankful I am to be his wife.  I truly am incredibly thankful to be Mrs. CME!

I am thankful for my daughters and sons.  When I had my firstborn back in 1984, I had no idea how to be a parent.  I was just a kid myself.  I made many mistakes in how I raised my daughters, yet they have turned out to be amazing and successful young women.  They bless me with affirmation that even though I could have done things differently, I raised them to be respectful and loving adults.  I am thankful for their love and the relationships we have as mom/daughters. I'm thankful for sons-in-law that truly care about and love my daughters. I'm thankful for my g-baby and all the joy and laughter she brings to our family!  For my boys?  I’m still making mistakes, but hopefully not the same ones.  I’m thankful that I have the kind of relationship with each of them that I can have very frank conversations and know that they love me, even if they’re not too happy with me.  But as with my girls, they are kind and generous and loving.  As I guide them through this last stretch of their teen years, I pray that I can be a parent that gives them the shepherding they need while at the same time let them flourish and become their own person.  For all my children, I pray they continue to seek God’s best for their lives and that they fully understand and accept the love that Jesus has for each of them.

I am thankful for my parents and my sister and her family along with my extended family (in-laws).  Too often I can take it too lightly that I have another day with both my parents.  As we all age, I look and see that each and every day with them is a blessing to not take lightly.  Yesterday as I was praying for our meal and time together, God spoke very clearly to me about His blessing of family.  My brother-in-law survived a massive heart attack.  My mom’s thyroid nodules were benign.  My father-in-law’s seizures weren’t caused by a cancerous brain tumor!  No major issues with my Dad or sister; though general health could be better for both.  I have a GREAT relationship with my mother-in-law, which is truly a gift from God! CME’s Grampa and Gramma are still relatively healthy and it’s great to see pictures of them even if we can’t get up to visit often.  We don’t see much of our Michigan family, but I am thankful for ALL of them (aunts/uncles/sisters/nieces/cousins included.)  We also spent the afternoon with a family friend who just buried her husband on Tuesday.  Her Thanksgiving was hard.  Her grief, though hidden most of the time, was real.  I was reminded that Jesus understands grief.  He wept when He saw the pain and sadness of Lazarus’ family and friends – even though He knew that He was going to bring Lazarus back from the dead.  He understood what the family was feeling.  He understood that the family unit is to be a blessing and a reason to give thanks.  I am thankful for family.

I am thankful for the friends (sisters and brothers in Christ) who have poured into my life and spiritual growth over the years…too many of them to name, but you know who you are!  THANK YOU!  I praise God every time I think of you! (MB – this includes you!!!)

I am thankful for the International Students I get the honor and privilege of being around on a semi-regular basis!  They bring a new understanding to me about people and culture and family.  I feel like God has blessed me with the opportunity to see the world through their eyes!  I love them all and am thankful that I get to be a small part of their lives.

I am thankful for the staff at bariatric center who guided me through the process - to help me not only lose weight, but to learn about taking care of my body and health.  Yesterday my oldest daughter, oldest son and I spent our morning at the Turkey Day 5K.  I like this new tradition that started last year because it is a way to keep me thankful that I can participate in these.  Three years ago, I’m not sure if I could have even finished.  But because of God giving me the courage and strength and help from bariatric center, I can…and I do.  And I am thankful for this blessing…no matter how sore my legs are the next day!

Most of all, I am thankful for what Jesus did on the cross for me.  I am not worthy of His sacrifice.  I could never do enough to earn the grace He so freely gives me.  May I NEVER forget to be thankful for that!

So yes, I have a lot to be thankful for.  A lot to reflect on.  I will continue to have a thankful heart and I hope everyone who is a part of my life knows that you are important to me.  YOU are the blessings I am most thankful for on this earth!

Today is Brought to You by the Letters, T, F and NSV and the Number 5

I sometimes revert back to childhood and can't help the Sesame Street reference!

Anyway, wow!  What a day to be thankful for!  Not that I'm not thankful most days, but there really is something about taking a day out of the year to truly think about all the blessings God has bestowed upon us.  So that's the T - Thankful.

F is for friends.  I have said it before, but I really do have the most amazing friends ever!  Though God is moving some of my closest friends to other parts of the country (oh, I'll be a blubbering idiot when they move!) he is bringing new people into my life.  People who have commonalities with me and the heart God has given me.

Such is the case of "C".  Long story short is that she and her husband signed up for a class that I was teaching at church...we just connected.  Quickly. God has wired us similarly and our friendship is blossoming.  She texted me yesterday and said, "Are you still running tomorrow?  It's suppose to be cold!  Do you want to borrow my warm gear?"  To which I replied, "What is warm gear???"  Seriously!  I'm not a runner - I have no clue!

Which leads me to the letters NS and V (Non Scale Victory).  Do you know how lucky I am to have someone that I can borrow clothes from?!?  I've NEVER had that luxury before.  I've never had someone that can loan me something to wear.  But today?  Today I was warm and cozy in the 18 degree weather!  That is a HUGE NSV!

The 5 - yes, you guessed it - the Turkey Day 5K.  Today's 5K was sponsored by Goodwill Industries and the proceeds were to benefit the homeless people in Evansville.  It. was. cold.  But can you imagine how the homeless feel during this time of the year?  It makes me reflect on how we take some things for granted - like a warm place to rest.  So thankful for the reminder.  My oldest daughter and I participated together and though it wasn't my best time (45 minutes 31 seconds), we walked/ran it together!  I'm hoping this becomes a new tradition for our family.  It's a healthy start to the day!

Other Thanksgiving blessings... my youngest daughter and her husband decided to come into town.  That's always nice.  One of the international students joined us as well.  He misses his family and was glad to be able spend a celebration with an American family.  I was glad too!  One weird thing...I put WAY too much food on my plate.  WAY too much.  I didn't eat it... I couldn't (and didn't want to).  But that old habit happened.  I need to watch that!  Regardless, the food wasn't the main part of the day... Thank you God!

So yes, what a day God has given us! What a glorious day!
Oh...just hanging out with this turkey.

Before the race at the starting line.

We did it!

Love this little one!  I think she might like me a little too!

We're *that* family!  (Love that all my kids were together!)
My Family!  (minus Martin who totally missed the photo op!)

Attitude of Gratitude

I haven't been to a support group for several months.  Either I've been out of town, or the boys have had something on the schedule, or I just didn't feel up to it.  I find that I need those meetings.  It may seem silly, but to be able to talk with others who are going through what I've gone through, well, it's just good.

Since it's November, the topic was "gratitude".  We took a few minutes to write out some things we're thankful for and then we shared with the group.  But before we did that, I took a quick video of the group saying hi to my friend "M" whom God connected me with through this blog.  She moved a few months back and well, she's still on our hearts and I texted her the video so she knew how much she's loved and missed!

Anyway, here are the things I listed in the quick few minutes we had to jot down our thoughts.

  • I'm thankful that I am not defined by what the scale says...either at my highest or my lowest...but that my identity is that I am a child of God!
  • I'm thankful for God giving me the courage for RNY.
  • I'm thankful for the NSVs I've experienced along the way.
  • I'm thankful for the staff at bariatric center who have been great from day one!
  • I'm thankful that I can say no to food.
  • I'm thankful for good health!
  • I'm thankful for a job even when I'd rather not work.
  • I'm thankful for my friends...both old and new.
  • I'm thankful for a loving and supportive family.
  • I'm thankful for the opportunity to share my story, either through speaking at informational meetings or through my blog.
  • I'm thankful for technology to stay in contact with others (like M in OK!)
  • I'm thankful for gloves...and coats.
  • I'm thankful for PB2 and bananas.
  • I'm thankful for CME!!!!!

Yes, the list is random and yes it is only a small glimpse of what I'm truly thankful for.  God is so good and faithful in His promises.  I'm thankful that He is the center of my life and that through Christ Jesus, I can do all things!

I hope that you have a support group that encourages you.  Maybe it's not an "official" group through your bariatric center, but at least a group of people who are in the same boat as you are - who are there to comfort you when you cry and rejoice with you when you're celebrating!

18 Month Celebration

Eighteen months ago today I underwent gastric bypass surgery.  It was the beginning of a new era of my life.  Today I celebrated. I ran/walked in the Toulouse-Lautrekkin 5K for the Evansville Museum.  It's been nearly a year since I participated in a 5K and to be honest, I didn't train at all.  As I mentioned in my last post, I decided to use these races as the motivation to get moving again.  Since I didn't prepare, I wasn't quite as ready as I wanted to be, and I didn't finish as fast I as I had hoped.  But you know what?  I finished!  I was off my fastest time by 20 seconds.  I finished the race in 43:26.5.  I could "blame" the strong wind (yes, really...it was WAY windy) for the time, but there's nothing to blame.  I did it and doggone it I'm proud of it! So that's how I spent my 18-month surgiversary!

In other celebrations, my 18-month post-op was good!  Some things, though, never change.  I even told nurse that the scale still intimidates me.  I still hate getting on the scale.  It's been so mean to me in the past, and though I weigh at home, to step on the scale in front of someone makes me nervous.  What if I had gained weight?  What if I failed?  What if....?  Yeah...ugly stinkin' thinkin' again!  But my fear was irrational (no surprise); though I'm "slightly" up from my lowest weight, I was still 2 pounds less than I was at my 12 month check up. My BP was 96/60 and all medically appears to be really good!  MD was very pleased and even said I was like the poster child for RNY!  I laughed.  Really.  I don't see me as a poster child.  I see that God has continued to bless me and that even though it's harder every day, He keeps me in line. To God be the glory for the success that I've had!

The time has gone fast and 'm so thankful that God gave me the courage to go through this process 18 months ago!  I feel great and I can only hope and pray that God uses the healthier me in ways that I cannot even begin to imagine!

After the race with the daughter of a friend of mine.  She's absolutely precious!!!

Successful Day

Today I claim success.  Victory, of sorts.  Though I was under a lot of stress today I did not graze.  I did not make poor choices.  The temptations were there...trust me; sweets, breads, rice.  But I made good healthy choices today.

I fully believe its because I started my prayers this morning with this, "Father, I choose You over food.  I ask that you help me to say no to the temptations."  And I believe with all my heart that He is the reason I was able to do so today.  The cheesecake / pie / desserts didn't even look appealing at lunch.  I chose fruit.  The croissants for the chicken salad looked lovely... but I was satisfied with no bread at all.  Chips?  No thank you.  Salad? Yes, please!

It may seem like a silly post this evening, but it is my way of claiming today.  Of remembering that this gift God has given me is to be taken care of properly.  I am thankful and need to keep focused every moment of every day.  I refuse to let food control me ever again!

Thank you God for answering my prayer!

Normal

Who has a normal BMI?  This girl!  That's who!  As of this morning, my lovely Wii advised me that my BMI is "Normal"!!!  Say what?!  Normal!  Barely normal, but normal nonetheless.  First time to be at a normal BMI in my entire adult life!

Oh yeah!!  Oh yeah!!!  :::happy dancin'!!!:::

PS...the over use of exclamation points is a direct reflection of how excited I was this morning to see "normal" flash upon my TV screen.

PSS...my "before" BMI was above 40.  Dangerously obese.  Another reason to celebrate normal!

The Best Blogs of 2013

I added the "Feedjit" tracker on the side of my blog because I like to see where visitors to my blog are from. It's a cool little gadget that also shows me how someone stumbled upon it.  Today I was really confused.  I saw a huge spike in volume with multiple visitors that came here via TYWKIWDBI.  So I clicked on the link to see why.  I was so surprised to see that my blog was part of Minnesotastan's list of The Best Blogs of 2013!  I am shocked!!

CME is a subscriber to TYWKIWDB so I immediately asked him if he mentioned my blog - and he did during a very brief time when Minnesotastan asked his readers to "submit recommendations".  I nearly cried seeing my blog mentioned on this list!  Another beautiful example of CME's love and support for this journey.

So, if you're here from TYWKIWDBI...welcome!  If you're here from the Bethany McDonald Memorial Blogroll...welcome!  If you've stumbled upon it by happenstance...welcome! And for my friends and family...welcome!  Thanks for taking the time to show support and read about my journey!

CME - you are an amazing husband.  143!!

God bless you all!

The Difference A Year Makes

I was glancing through some old pictures and ran across some from this time last year.  Oh my!  What a difference a year makes!  I am so thankful that God gave me the courage to pursue gastric bypass surgery!

Surviving Thanksgiving

What a great day!  The morning started out with CME and our oldest son preparing the turkey for Thanksgiving.  I made a pumpkin swirl cheesecake last night using low-fat cream cheese and Splenda and then today, I made a sweet potato casserole from a recipe from my mother-in-law, once again substituting brown sugar with brown sugar Splenda.  I don't know if you want to call it "planning" so I knew what I could eat or if it's just a change that will benefit all our family.  Either way, it worked well.

The surprise of the afternoon was that our youngest daughter unexpectedly drove in for Thanksgiving.  Didn't expect to see her until CHRISTmas.  It was a good surprise!

As we prepared for our meal, each one of the 15 of us said what we were thankful for.  We had everything from "not burning the turkey" to "not having lung cancer as originally thought."  Of course, we were all thankful for our family and friends and being able to spend the day with each other.  I was thankful for the journey that God is taking me down.  He even made today - one that generally consists of over indulgence to the max - super easy for me.

With measuring utensils in hand, I successfully made it through Thanksgiving!  It was a bit interesting to look at my plate with a total of 4 ounces scattered in small groupings.  I enjoyed turkey, sweet potatoes, broccoli casserole, deviled egg, stuffing (YAY for my sister always making that weight watchers stuffing that's healthy!) and even had some of my cheesecake!  Wow...looking at that, how did I eat all that and not eat more than my stomach can hold?  One bite... tastes just as good!  The first bite tastes just as good as the last...so who cares if it's one bite or 20?  I certainly did not!

So thankful for gastric bypass surgery.  So thankful that our family could spend the day together.  So thankful that my focus wasn't on the food... So very thankful for the changes God is making in me!  So what are YOU thankful for?

Another Milestone

"I'm not obese any more!!!" I screeched this morning.  I weighed on the Wii and I didn't, hear those icky words "That's obese."  I took a double take and sure enough, my BMI is now considered "Overweight" as opposed to obese.  It's a huge milestone for me.  I'm the weight now that I was when I was a freshman in high school.  That means that for over 30 years, I have been was obese.  My goodness!  THIRTY YEARS!

Thankfully God has given me the tool to change the next 30 years.  I will NEVER hear "That's obese" again!  Ever!  Thank you, Jesus!!!
